Kyrgyzstan is preparing for a very important event - the country has the honour of preparing this fall’s XIX International Astronomy Olympiad for pupils. Participants from more than 30 countries will gather from around the world, not just to admire the beauty of the starry sky that spreads over the Tien Shan, but also to test their knowledge and to compete intellectually with each other. The significance of this event for our country is difficult to overestimate as it is not just congress of young astronomers, the event also has deep socio-cultural and politico-educational context. Today astronomy-space education is one of the best policies in many countries, for the study and exploration of outer space becomes more pervasive in the XXI century. Unfortunately, in our country this directionis in a rather neglected statefor many years. The study of astronomy is included at the level of general coursework in schools, yet to study astronomy there is only 1 hour per week in the grade 11 (the last school year of comprehensive schooling, the graduating year). Perhaps it is enough to motivate pupils to study the mysteries of the sky, but only just about. And what then? Where should teenagers go to continue there study of astronomy in more depth?  In the capital Bishkekthere are just a few astronomical clubs left, for a long time  the city planetarium has been out of order, and there has not been any observatory, and there is even less to say about the regions (villages). One of the few remaining institutions of extra-curricular education that teaches astronomical courses is the National Children's Engineering and Technical Academy "Altyn tuyun” (RDITA “Altyn tuyun”). This year children’s astronomy club "Constellation" is celebrating its 8 year. Over the years children have participated in international astronomy competitions, representing our country well in Korea, Indonesia, Russia, Kazakhstan, and they even won prizes. Annually RDITA "Altyn tuyun" organizes for them the summer astronomical school on the shores of Issyk-Kul Lake. Pupils have been on the cosmodromes "Baikonur" and "Yasnyi", have met with famous astronauts, including our compatriot Salizhan Sharipov. Thanks to the achievements of our children, as well as experience RDITA "Altyn tuyun" in international events, 17 November 2008, the Kyrgyz Republic hosted the IV Asian-Pacific Astronomy Olympiad.

And this year in order to promote astronomy and space education, as well as to attract the government's attention to the problems of its development RDITA "Altyn tuyun" in cooperation with the Physics Institute of Solid matter, at the Russian Academy of Sciences has initiated to make an application of Kyrgyzstan to the organizing committee of the International Astronomical Olympiad. After a lengthy review, the right to conduct the XIX International Astronomy Olympiad for school students was given to our country. We are pleased to note that its implementation is scheduled to be initiatives at the highest levels of government: in the opening ceremony, which will take place at the National Philharmonic named after T.Satylganov on 13 October 2014 at 16.00p.m, will be attended by the representatives of the Government of  Kyrgyz Republic, deputies of Parliament of the Kyrgyz Republic, the representatives of the embassies of the participating countries, as well as scientists of the National Sciences Academy of the country. Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the XIX International Astronomy Olympiadhimself became Minister of Education and Science Sadykov K.J.

Among the great assistance to the organizers of the event have been the support from the governor of Issyk-Kul region and the head of the Issyk-Kul region, who made it possible to conduct astronomical Olympiads in Cholpon-Ata, at the sanatorium "Kyrgyzskoe vzmorye" (translated as The Kyrgyz Seashore). The  great attention  towards children, the desire to welcome the guests of the country are reflected in the organization of the cultural programme: in order for the guests to getwill get acquainted with the culture and history of the ancient Kyrgyz people the young astronomers will visit museums in Bishkek and Cholpon-Ata, they will also take part in the sightseeing tours in the capital, Semenov Gorge, as well as they will take a tour in a cruise on Issyk-Kul Lake, as well as they will get acquainted with Kyrgyz traditions and national cuisine.

The Olympiad consists of three rounds: theoretical, practical, solution Olympiad questions, and observant. The panel of judges consisted of prominent scientists from near and far. Its closing and awards ceremony will be held at the sanatorium "Kyrgyzskoe vzmorye” on 20 October 2014 at 15.00p.m. Young astronomers of Kyrgyzstan will give the right to host a XX International Astronomy Olympiad for pupils representatives of the country, whose name will be announced in the final part of the event. For the organization of the official part of the Olympiad Feld Viktor Leonidovich was invited as the programme director , who together with the creative children’s groups of the capital and of the  Issyk-Kul region made a promise to give guests an unforgettable holiday in the best traditions of the Kyrgyz culture and the arts.

The General media sponsor of the Olympiad is the National TV and Radio Corporation. Active support and cooperation will be provided by most of the Embassies of the participating countries, as well as public and private organizations.

Certainly, the organization of the Olympiad would not be possible without volunteers. Therefore, a special volunteer centerwas formed, which consisted of students of the largest universities in the capital: KRSU named after Boris Yeltsin, Bishkek Humanities University, The Kyrgyz State Technical University named after I. Razzakov etc. These guys are repeated participants of various national and international projects, well aware of the history of Kyrgyzstan and foreign languages, so there is no doubt that our guests patronized and cared for will feel comfortable.

Given that so many people have expressed their indifferent attitude to children, are ready to provide assistance and support in the organization of this great event, want to believe that the holding of the XIX International Astronomy Olympiad in our country will not just be a striking and memorable event, but also will become a great impetus to the development of the astronomy and space education in Kyrgyzstan, because so many boys and girls dream to learn the mysteries of the universe! Let's give them a chance!
